About Swallow Conservation


Swallow Conservation is a western Massachusetts-based non-profit organization whose goal is to conserve, protect, and study swallows that breed in the northeastern region of North America, specifically Cliff Swallows, Barn Swallows, and Bank Swallows. We accomplish this by monitoring nesting sites, developing hands-on management techniques, and though public education and advocacy.

Swallow Conservation is devoted to the conservation of swallows that breed northeastern North America. We focus on three species: Cliff Swallow, Barn Swallow, and Bank Swallow. We do not address Rough-winged Swallows, Tree Swallows, or Purple Martins. Rough-winged populations appear to be relatively stable in the Northeast, and Tree Swallows and Purple Martins are the focus of several other groups that are devoted to their research and conservation:

About Mara Silver

Swallow Conservation was founded by Mara Silver, who has been working on swallow conservation projects for the past 30 years. She completed her undergraduate degree in Human Ecology at College of the Atlantic in Maine, where she focused on ceramics. She holds a master’s Degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where she researched the characteristics of river banks used by nesting Bank Swallows.
